Champagne Crété Chamberlin

Côte des Blancs & Valleé de la Marne

Champagne Crété Chamberlin

The Crété lineage is one of the oldest wine growing families in Champagne. For 342 years the vineyard work and will of each generation have shaped what Mathieu & Blandine Crété represent and have created with Champagne Crété Chamberlin. They are the 15th generation of winegrowers and 8th generation of independent winemakers

Mathieu and Blandine are now the happy custodians and faithful servants of their most valued asset: the vine. Their philosophy: “Tout commence à la vigne” (It all starts with the vine) shapes their daily task and drives their joy.

Accordingly, from the very first viticultural work in spring, each terroir is approached with the aim of respecting the soil, either by controlled grassing on certain plots or by plowing. The approach of the work in the vineyards is global in the sense of an organic/biodynamic culture while remaining at the service of and listening to Nature. No dogma, no certification is necessary to their work because they do not wish to be locked into a limited method. The only influences on the cultivation technique are the climatic conditions.

This single conviction and the great diversity of their ancestors’ work guides Mathieu’s inspirations while caring for a complex fragmentation of 84 different plots. A special and unique organization of the cuvées into three ‘Collections’ brings coherence to extend the messaging of the vine to the wine. The vineyards are in full expression of aromatic potential with an average vine age of 60 years, most planted with massal selection from vines over 100 to 120 years old. This distinction deserves special attention, as it not only testifies to the vigor of the vine through the ages, but also to the origin of the wines’ quality.

The estate is composed of 8 hectares of vineyards distributed among 11 villages that represent the three main regions of Champagne with agro-geographical specificities and diversity of soils, orientation, and exposures:

~ Côte des Blancs on chalk base ~ Grand Cru: Le Mesnil sur Oger, Oger, Avize and Premier Cru: Cuis and Villeneuve-Renneville

~ Coteaux Sud de Epernay mainly on chalky clay ~ Moussy (cradle of the family and current headquarters of the Domain) + Pierry, Vinay, Brugny, and Vaudancourt

~ Vallée de Surmelin ~ on limestone and marl ~ Baulne en Brie

Crete Chamberlin 1683 Rose front TTB

1683 Rosé Brut NV

Arrived much later on the Estate, this champagne expresses Roland Crété’s passion for making his red wine. Indeed, he was in the 1960s one of the pioneers in the elaboration of this cuvée. He thus demonstrated the know-how and precision of making a blended rosé. He made this cuvée a necessary part of the range. The CDB (Côte des Blancs) Collection

This collection is exclusively composed of vintages from the Côte des Blancs, the great appellations of the Domaine (Premiers and Grand Crus). It also pays tribute to the filial sharing between the father, Dominique, and the daughter, Blandine, in the process of making “atypical” champagnes. It finally reflects the love that Blandine and Mathieu have for Chardonnay. Dedicated to this grape, the collection magnifies its rich and complex aromas.

CDB Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut 2019

Crete Chamberlin Les Mazaux front TTB

Les Mazaux Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut 2018

The only land parcel claimed to date of the Domaine Crété Chamberlin. A 100% Chardonnay Premier Cru from the terroir of Villeneuve-Renneville. The name of this cuvée is the name on the land register. The story of the name “Mazaux” comes from the fact that the parcel is located on a late sector of the Côte des Blancs. This 1-acre plot is therefore always worked last compared to the other vines on the Estate because of the continental climate that generates scorching periods. So at the time, when onlookers saw the winegrower and his workers bowed down in the vineyards under the sweltering heat, the term “maso” was often used. This wine reflects the identity of this particular terroir. Since 2010, the year of planting, the parcel has been gently ploughed in order to aerate the vines and allow them to develop as they wish. 1g/ L, disgorged Feb 2024.
*2018 ~ 1g/L dosage. A very special study in terroir with a Bourgogne approach to a single plot vinification. The wood of this clonal selection is small and cannot support a lot of grapes, the result is a unique concentration. Ripe stone fruit complimenting a superior texture that’s rich, creamy, diamond dusty chalk over a long arc of savory minerals.

The Aromanescence Collection

This collection brings together champagnes from great years with their complexity and the excellence of their rank. It is composed of great Champagne wines, always vintage. The aim of this range, indeed, is about making discovery cuvées exclusively produced when extraordinary years occur: 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru, 100% Meunier or even a great Rosé de Saignée. This collection reveals the exceptional nature of Champagne and its diversity in its smallest details.

The fabulous destiny of great Chardonnays in great vintages, previously only made in 2008/2012. A cuvée that reveals the natural sweetness of the fruit. Just shy of 10yrs on lees it shows the extension but remains super fresh and acid driven. This is a Champagne making the argument for a decanting. Savory notes of flint and florals with rich pear and lengthy mineral essence with a very delicate mousse. 2g/L dosage, disgorged Nov 2023.
